Tezz Picks Up Traction

Housefull 2 would be in theatres by the time this article appears. I had presented in this column last week an analysis of the FTI parameters of Housefull 2. From this week’s Film Trac it appears that the Spontaneous Awareness of the movie has improved and one should expect an opening of Rs 30-35 crore. Except this film the other releases in April do not have significant FTI and hence I do not expect any film to better than Housefull 2, in the month of April.

Of the six films that we are tracking for April, Tezz seems to have started picking up some traction. The movie’s theatrical trailer is excellent. The cut-through factor is good and the collage of images leaves no doubt about what to expect. The trailer very clearly positions the movie as a pure, fast paced action thriller. This genre is popular across different age groups and hence has a very large audience base. The locations and action scenes in the trailer are definite visual hooks. The background music is definitely ‘inspired by’ the Bourne series. With Ajay Devgan and Anil Kapoor in the lead, the trailer does a remarkably good job of balancing the roles of the protagonist and the antagonist. However, from the trailer it is difficult to make out what exactly is Ajay Devgn up to, and I guess that’s where the trailer will pull the audience to the theatres.

Currently the FTI of this film is 7.4 and I expect the movie to easily reach an FTI of 20-25 by the time it hits the theatres. Will it be a mega block buster with a Rs 100 crore tag? The FTI built up so far does not warrant this number and it is unlikely to hit big in just two more weeks.

Bittoo Boss, The Loving Doll and Maximum are slated for release next week. Except Bittoo Boss that has a single digit FTI the other two films have an FTI in decimals. Hence, it is difficult to make any estimate of what these films would be worth at the box-office.

The theatrical trailer of Bittoo Boss has a PoP value of less than 20. With such a number it is almost impossible to get the movie to track well in our FilmTrac and reach an FTI of 15-20, the number needed to make a reasonably accurate forecast of the opening of a film. Since Bittoo Boss is tracking at an FTI of 2.0 we are unable to make any prediction about this film.

Bittoo Boss reminds me of Band Baaja Baaraat which had newcomers but  the theatrical trailer had a very strong emotive factor built by an excellent chemistry between the lead pair. Band Baaja Baaraat had a good PoP value, tracked well and went on to make an impression at the box-office last year. But Bittoo Boss’ theatrical trailer does not have the same class and punch. This is reflected in the very low FTI of this film.
